HIS ESCAPE FROM GAOL. [By Electric telegraph—Copyright [United Press Association.] New York, August 18. Harry K. Thaw, the slayer ol Stanford White, on dune 2G, 190 G, escaped from the hospital for the criminal insane at Mattawan early in the morning. He darted through an open gate and through an open door to a standing automobile and dashed over the Connecticut boundary. Five confederates manned the car. T 1 re police have secured the license number and names of the men who registered at an hotel. The hospital authorities believe thai tiic fugitive has made for the Long Island shore, where a yacht is. waiting to convey him to Europe, The superintendent of the asylum whom Thaw rushed past, has been av rested and other arrests are expcc ted. Five hundred dollars reward lias been offered.
The escape was rendered possible through the declaration of the pri inner that unless legally liberated hr "■mild not attempt to escape, thus getting extra privileges. Uniformed police guard the hotel. Mrs Thaw is staying in New York owing to her fear of her husband’s threats. A FRUITLESS SEARCH. A LETTER TO MOTHER. (Received 10.45 a.m.) ‘ New York, August 18.
