MEDICAL CONGRESS.
DISEASE OF PELLAGRA. [By Electric Telegraph—Copyright] [United Press (Association.] (Received 1.15 p.m.) London, August 8. '”At the Medical Congress, Dr. Beale, Texas, described the new disease pellagra, from which three thousand Americans died in 1912, and fifty thousand are now suffering, most of whom
are women tied to house work. The disease was purely of academic interest until six years ago, though it was known of in Italy. Investigation showed that it was fairly widespread in Scotland, with isolated cases in the South of England. It first produces itching of the hands and usually spread some time later, the digestive organs being attacked, finally leading to melancholia and insanity. It
lis generally attributed to fungi upon corn and maize. (Received 8 a.m.) I London, August 8. I Dr. Crichton Browne said there was Ino good reason in a vigorous expanding race for the present increase of lunacy. Notwithstanding the successful treatment of diseases hitherto 'conducing to lunacy the accumulation ’of chronic lunacy rolls on, and the rate jof recovery has fallen during the last half century.
