LATE LOCALS.
A charge under the Defence Act had to be withdrawn at the Court this •afternoon owing to the fact that the police had been unable to find defendant in the district. The S.M. said lie understood that there was a section of the Act under which men could bo charged with failing to notify change of address. He did not think the Defence Department should drop a case merely because the offender failed to notify a change ot address.
Leonard MoPhail pleaded guilty at the Court this afternoon to failing to attend the last mounted camp. Ho said he had gone for a holiday to Tasmania, and had only returned a few days ago. He wrote to Lieut. Crawshaw explaining that he was going for a holiday, but the letter did not seem to have been received. He was not opposed to military training, and was very much surprised when ho was summoned. On defendant promising to put in four extra days at the next camp he was ‘ convicted without fine. Win. E. Porter was fined ss, with costs 7s, for failing to attend drill.
T. Carson proceeded against A. J. Davey at the Court this morning for £l2 15s, hire of a horse for seventeen weeks at 15s per week, Davey coun-ter-claiming for money owing, of which the sum of 17s ivas admitted. After hearing evidence -the counterclaim was dismissed with the exception of the sum admitted and judgment was given for Carson at the rate of 10s per week. Costs totalling £4 17s 5d were allowed..
