NOVEL STRIKE CURE,

Before the commission of inquiry into the working of the industrial Jaws, Mr Hughes, director of the Colonial Meat Co., submitted a scheme to prevent strike losses. He suggested that ten per cent, be deducted from the wages of employers until the amount is equivalent to two months’ pay. This would bo banked at four per cent, interest, the employee to add six per cent, interest therto, and the moneys to be available fttr investment with approved employers who would pay ten per cent, interest thereon. If at the end of eighteen months, any sum held on deposit exceeds one month’s wages, the balance would be returned to the employee with full accrued interest, provided he does noi participate in a strike during the period, but if be participated in r strike the deposit would he forfeited and applied to any loss sustained by the employer.
THE MINERS’ CONGRESS
Berlin, July 21
The International Miners’ Congress at Carlsbad is considering a proposal from Britain and Belgium for a- compulsory eight-hour day, with sixteen hours between shifts, the total shifts in a week not to exceed six in all. It is proposed that the parliaments of every country should legislate to prevent employers evicting workmen during industrial disputes.
