HUNGER FOR LAND.
THE BALFOUR ESTATE
[Per Press, Association.] Pahiatua, July 20
At the conclusion of the Mangnbainoka land ballot yesterday, the following telegram was sent to the Prime Minister by the President of the Pahiatua District Progressive Association: "There were three hundred and fifty disappointed applicants for land in the Mangatainoka block, all of thorn being good settlers. There is. an unsatisfied demand for land in this fertile district, and this association strongly urges you to hasten the subdivision of the Balfour Estate."
The following reply was received from the Hon. W. F. Massey:—"l have referred your telegram re the Balfour Estate to the Chairman of the Land Purchase Board, and the Government will endeavor to supply land for those who require it." The Balfour Estate, which comprises 3000 acres of good land adjoining the town, is owned.by Mr A. J. Balfour, ex-Prime Minister of Great Britain. It was offered, to the Government some years ago for £ll lQs< per acre; and | has lately ff> c &fr re-offerect•'•, -.at something like I £18" per acre^
