ATTACK ON A MOTOR CAR.

010 DRIVER FINED. John Jackson was charged at the Court this morning with having on July 13th at Midhirst, damaged a glass screen on a motor car valued at 15s, the property of Angeline. Diamond. He pleaded guilty, but denied all intention to cause damage, Sergeant McNeely stated that on Sunday last Mr Diamond, with hit; wife and two friends, were returning to Stratford in his motor car, and when half way along the road from Midhirst defendant was met in a gig. The motor car was drawn off the road as far as possible. The crown of the road was very high, and if the car had been taken further off there would have been a possibility of the car capsizing. The car made ample room for the gig to pass. Defendant, as he passed the car, leant out of the back of the gig and struck the glass 'screen with the butt end of his whip. Defendant was overtaken at Midhirst and shown the damage he had done. No satisfaction could be got out of him. He refused to give his name, and all he would say was that he would serve all motor cars in the same manner. He was slightly under the influence of liquor at the time. Tt had taken some considerable trouble to find out where defendant lived. The S.M. (Mr Kenrick) said that there was an obligation on drivers of motor cars to draw off the road just as ranch as other vehicles. There were certain motor car drivers who kept the whole of the road, and it would be well if some such were brought before the Court. Of course, in tho present case there was no suggestion of that. If a gig was forced on to the side of the road through a. motor holding the middle.of the road the gig driver should proceed in Court against the car driver. In the prosent case the fine would be light, but tho public must be warned that they must not take the law into their own hands. A fine of 10s with costs £1 7s was imposed, and tho defendant was ordered to pay the amount of the damage (15s).
