NAUTICAL ENQUIRY.
ENGINEER OFFICERS PUNISHED
[Per Press Association.] Auckland, July 8
The Court of Inquiry concerning tin' collapse of one of the boilers of the Northern Company’s steamer on the voyage from Thames to Auckland has concluded. The -Court found that the collapse of two furnaces of the starboard boiler was serious damage within the meaning of section 238 of the “Shipping and Seamen’s Act,” and that the only reasonable inference from the evidence was that the collapse was due to shortness of water in the boilers, caused by excessive scumming, for which the Second Engineer, John Gordon, was held responsible. His certificate was therefore suspended for three months. The Court found that the Chief Engineer, William Appleby, had not shown a due appreciation of his duties and responsibilities in matters calling for his supervision, but thought the ends of justice would bo met if ho paid the costs of the inquiry. Orders were made accordingly.
