THE BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY.
In April last Alt Percy Thomson, on behalf of the Stratford Beautifying Society, wrote to the Minister for Public Works, asking for tenancy of the river bank between the Pa tea bridge in Broadway and the railway bridge to enable some planting of suitable trees to be carried out this sason. It was later discovered that the reserve was a railway reserve, and the Minister for Railways was accordingly approached with a request that he would grant the Society permission to fence and plant the hank at its own risk. The General-Manager of Railways has now informed Mr Thomson that the Minister of Railways (the Hon. Mr Homes) has directed that there is no objection to a lease of the available land for beautifying purposes being granted at a peppercorn rental, subject to termination without compensation if at any time required for railway purposes. Mr Ronayne further states that early possession is to be given to enable the Society to commence planting on Arbor Day, July 16th. The Society is to be congratulated on making a start at the spot proposed, and we hope to see a good deal of support forthcoming. There is a very great deal of work waiting in Stratford for somebody to undertake, but of course with the very limited funds at its disposal the Beautifying Society, like the Domain Board, will have to travel slowly. It is pretty certain, however, that when the residents see practical evidence of what can be done, they will come forward more willingly to hear a hand.
