There is a difficulty in handling the smallpox outbreak, patients residing in the suburbs all round the city and some in Paramatta being reported. A second factory in Cleveland street has been declared infected, and has closed. Thred fresh cases have been discovered and quarantined to-day. All are of a mild nature. The health authorities emphasise the urgent necessity for wholesale vaccination to ensure the stamping out of the disease. Numbers are acting on the advice. The Union Company specially warns passengers to New Zealand that they must be vaccinated. Other shipping companies are adopting precautionary measures. Including contacts, thirtytwo are now quarantined.

VACCINATION OR QUARANTINE. (Received 9.50 a.m.) Sydney, July 4. The crusade in stamping out the epidemic is being pushed on vigorously. Every known case is being quarantined, and the premises where found are being fumigated and closed. All contacts are given the choice of ■•being promptly vaccinated or sent to quarantine. It has been found necessary in view of avoiding risk to both vaccinate and quarantine certain contacts. THE MAKERA’S PASSENGERS. [Per Press Association.! Auckland, July 4. . On arrival of the Makura from Sydney en route to Vancouver early this morning she berthed at the wharf. She had 250 passengers, including .86 for New Zealand. Of the latter, 42 who were unvaccinated submitted without demur to the operation, Dr. Sharman,assisted by the ship’s doctor, getting through the work expeditiously. The vessel was released after hours’ detention.
