SEVERE EARTHQUAKE.

RECORDED IN SYDNEY. [By Electric Telegraph—Copyright] [United Press [Association.] Sydney, June 27. The Government Observatory reports that an-extremely large earthquake has been recorded, commencing at 12.59 in the afternoon on Thursday, and the second phase at 1.4. The principal surface waves occurred at 1.16. These were of enormous amplitude, reaching, their greatest intensity very rapidly. The amplitude of the largest was 23} millimetres, considerably in excess of any other tremor ever recorded here. The after tremors continued until 3.7, and were of a saw-tooth pattern. The origin was about 2500 miles from Sydney, probably in the same neighbourhood as the earthquake recorded on May 13. Melbourne, June 27. The Government astronomer states that the earthquake recorded is one of the most striking ever taken here. It occurred probably to the north-east of Australia, in the Pacific. ITS CENTRE IN THE PACIFIC. (Receiver! 10.10 a.m.) Sydney, June 28. Father Pigofc, of the Riverview Observatory, . places the epicentre of the earthquake near the northern end of Tonga and the Kermadec Islands in a trough which runs north north-east of New Zealand, and forms a line of great weakness in the bed of the Pacific.
