PARLIAMENT.
FORMAL OPENING.
YESTERDAY'S DOINGS
Parliament was formally opened at 2.30 p.m. yesterday, there being only a small attendance of the public. The House immediately proceeded to elect a Speaker, Mr F. W. Lang, Member for Manakau, receiving the appointment without opposition. The Prime Minister (Hon. W. F. Massey) tendered congratulations and at once moved the adjournment of the House. This was seconded by Mr W. I). S. McDonald, who on behalf of his side of the House congratulated Mr Lang, and the House adjourned. This afternoon the Speech from the Throne was delivered, and it is expected that the Address-in-Reply debate will commence on Wednesday, when Mr C. A. Wilkinson (Member for Egmont) will move the usual motion and Mr C. E. Statham will second
It is anticipated that the names of live new members of the Legislative Council will be announced to-day. four Europeans and one native, the latter in place of Mr Wi Pere, who forfeited his seat. The Liberal Party so far remains leaderless, and Mr Millar has practically announced himself as an Independent.
