ERRING TERRITORIALS.

A FINE OF FIVE POUNDS

FOR FAILING TO PAR ADa

W. S. Birdsall pleaded guilty at the Court' this morning to tailing to attend Cadet parade on June, sth. Serg.-Major Bonar said defendant had .on January 24th last been lined £2 for failing to attend parade. Since then he had attended very few parades.

Mr Kenrick, S.M. (to defendant;: Why did you not attend? Defendant: It was a very wet night.

The S.M.: I should not think the Department would accept such an excuse from a man living in town, though it might stand good in respect of a man who had three or forr miles to go to drill. The Sergt-Major: He has missed thirty or forty parades. ‘the S.M., addressing defendant, said if he could not give a sufficient reason for not attending parades, it would be necessary to sentence him ■to twenty-eight days’ military detention. In the detention, drill started early in the morning, and a solid day’s work was done. Most people found, after experience, that it was ' more easy to put in the drills as they become due. The present defendant should have been sufficiently warned by his previous fine, and perhaps it would be necessary to increase the amount of the fine. If the higher fine failed to remedy matters, it would be necessary to inflict detention without option. Defendant would be fined £5 with 7s costs, in default 21 days’ military detention, fourteen days being allowed in which to pay the fine.

Eric Robson was fined £2, with costs 7s, for failing to attend Cadet parade on June sth.
