DOMINION’S NEW METHODS

Wellington, June 21

In the course of a statement to a Post reporter, on the subject of immigration, the Hon. Mr Bell (Minister for Immigration), intimated the new methods that had been adopted of ■bringing before the English people the advantages which New Zealand offered to intending immigrants, and for inviting and obtaining applications for assisted passages from suitable immigrants Who might otherwise be induced to go to Canada, Australia, and South Africa. It might be necessary to supplement the staff of the High Commissioner by the addition of one or more persons from New Zealand who knew the class of people required. The High Commissioner reported that he had been, able to maice entirely satisfactory arrangements with the shipping companies for the space required during this and the next year. The Government had decided that where a domestic servant could not afford tq pay portion of the passage money, the Government would pay the whole,sum pn her undertaking to refund it by instalments. Similar had been authorised in. the case of farm, labourers'. The Government would, through the London Office, endeavour to be prepared to tender in New Zealand farm labourers of experience and physically capable, but it must be the business of farming communities to arrange and to satisfy the Government that labour so tendered shall, find immediate and constant employment at a fair wage. The High Commissioner advised that to obtain boys,.for N ew Zealand with any farm training 13a per week and found must be offered to begin with.
