BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Stratford Borough Council was held last night. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. P. Kirkwood), and Crs. Morison, Richards, Fredric, King. Arden, Masters, Boon, Dingle and Thompson. REPORTS. The Abattoir Manager reported for May: Messrs Wickham Bros, have given up business in Stratford, and their paddock has been taken over byMr J. F. Curtis as from June Ist. Mr E. J. Kirkwood has delivered ten cords of firewood at the Abattoir, which has been stacked and measured. A new copper-stand is required. The old one, which was not the property of the Abattoir, is burnt out. This copper has been the means of saving a large quantity of fuel. The heavy rains have ; had a very bad effect on the races and roads at the Abattoir, and I should be pleased if something can be done for them.— Adopted. . The reports of the Overseer, the Works Committee, and the Abattoir Committee (previously published) were adopted. The purchase of material montioned in the Abattoir Committee's report was authorised. The Lighting Committee reported that though the Electrical Supply Co. had charged for new lights as from April Ist, the wiring was not completed till late in May. The Committee recommended that payment be made only 1 for 1 the time since 1 the full completion of the wiring.—The report was adopted.

GENERAL. M. Hassall asked for the levelling of a piece of footpath in Miranda Street.—Referred to the Works Committee to report.

The Employers' Federation forwarded a circular asking for a subscription to a fund for the conservation of the interests of employers of labour.—Received.

On the motion of the Mayor, the Overseer was instructed to prepare an estimate for painting and repairing the Victoria and Swansea Road bridges. ~,, The Overseer was instructed to prepare an estimate for forming and gravelling the road for one chain beyond Mr Roidas. house on Pembroke Road East. . , ■■/?<,;.

A Finance Committee was set, up consisting of the chairmen of all other committees.

The Mayor-moved that the: following, rates be struck for the General rate, 3d in the pound, and special |d and l-12d in the pound (all on the unimproved rate of j 6*d pound on the annual value.—Carried. •'The Engineer of the Public Works Department wrote asking in what streets it was proposed to erect street lights on telephone ]>oles and what clearance below the telephone..wires- is .proposed-to;.be\sl-2 lowed.—lnformation supplied. A. H. Hugget wrote asking that a light be erected near the .lower, .entrance to the'Show Grounds. ' It was at a dark part of the road and would benefit a good number of residents.—Referred to the Lighting Committee to report. . M. J. Patterson wrote asking that a hole in Miranda Street be filled up. The work, the writer said, was passed to bo done some years ago.—. Left in the hands of the Works Committee to report. Mr T. G. Grubb, captain of the

Fire Brigade, wrote stating that he and the senior members of the Brigade knew the positions of the valves for concentrating the water pressure, and the keys for turning them on and off were taken '-to all fires.—Received.

The statement of receipts and expenditure as at May 31st was as follows :—Debit balance April 30th, £2649 5s Id expenditure £448 17s 7d; receipts, £139 19s; debit balance May 31st, £2958 3s lid. ' Mr E. A. Drake, secretary of the Fire Brigade, notified that the Brigade would meet for inspection on June 10th (to-day), and stated that the Brigade would be glad if the Council's Fire Brigade Committee could take that opportunity to inspect the plant. —The Fire Brigade Committee is to attend the inspection. The Acting Under Secretary for Public Works wrote stating that the Department had no hardwood piles for sale.—Received. The Deputy Chief Health Officer wrote asking for a list of holders of

plumbers' licenses in Stratford and the period for which sulh licenses hold good.—lnformation has been supplied. Mr C. Massey, manager of the Bank of Australasia, wrote notifying that the Bank declined to share in

the cost of the proposed diversion of ■storm water .--The Mayor said the drain brought storm water under the County Hotel, the New Zealand Clothing Factory, and the Bank, and the two latter had refused to pay a share of the cost of the work which had been done, and which it was thought absolutely necessary to carry out.—The letter was received. Mr S. G. Stanton and two others, residents of Regan Street West, petitioned that the present footpath on the southern side of the street might be continued from its present end eastwards to the junction of Regan Street and Brecon Road. It was pointed out that at present there was a footpath for only half the length [of the road, leaving a very bad porition of the road (in a deep dip) still

to be traversed. Petitioners asked that the desired footpath be proceeded with before the winter set in.—The Mayor said the overseer estimated the cost of the work at £ll.—Cr King said the work had been applied for before, but there were now more people living in the vicinity, and the work was considered absolutely necessary. The Work was authorised.
