j SOFTOOL. ; About ten o'clock on i Wednesday night an outbreak of fire' was reported | f¥6m the Ar'amoh'o School ; building, and .which, .re.s.ujted, in two rooms, of thp,. old. por'tiipn „f$ [ the' buildingi being,,(destroyed., The cause of the fire (states the ■Wanganui Herald) is rather a mystery, but the caretaker thinks it might have been caused by rats. Mrs Majckie, the caretaker, states that she left the building at about 7 p.m., when, everything appeared to be in good order! A person who was living next door says at quarter to ten he noticed no signs of fire. Quarter of an hour later the left wing was rioticed to be on fire. This room was occupied by the third and fourth standards. The portion of the building which was destroyed was very old, the two rooms being built in' 1879. While the Fire Brigade was fighting to save a portion of the school, a band of willing helpers turned their attention to the school property and succeeded in salvaging the piano (a little scorched), a sewing machine, and a number of desks. About two hundred children are rendered school-less. The destroyed portion of the school was insured for £4OO. As'is usual in similar cases, a departmental enquiry into the cause of the fire will be held. A temporary school will probaby he opened on.Mgpday
