SPORTING.

(By Cicero.) The Auckland Racing Club will open their winter meeting to-morrow, when the Great Northern Hurdles, of £IOOO, and the Cornwall Handicap, of £SOO, will be decided. As usual, this Club received a large acceptance for the various events, and some splendid racing should eventuate. The large number of, nineteen have paid up for the Maiden Steeplechase. DorandO, Delegate, and Tjri, will probably receive most support. : .No M )ess than tlprty-two have criecf content for the Je'rvois Handicap. T>evastation and Tripdlii are among the number, j . Of the; 'names ( , in .the Maiden hurdles, Manuwera and Sph'inx; are jgoing wellj. ;; ~j ; ,; yi j j.;; |,; ( Eighteen owners made the-final payment for I the Cbte^ib*'Northerit >Hurdlesj : but the scratching pen way be used, on two or three of that number. The Native holds pride of place, but on Wanganui for.m, v - can little., chance. Phophet next on the list is a real good horse, when himself, but appears'to-have plenty .of. weight, considering the distance: ',„t.l The party behind Lloyd's £4sftv£.hat gelding a' great chaneey-as -he is-go-ing really well track. Chief 'Marshal is Hissed' as by those who should know, but a rumour is current that the stable mate (Whakaweira). has been backed to win a lot of, money. The locallyowned Bercola ran a really game race at Wanganui, and will probably strip as fit as anything in the race. Bravest will probably start in the Maiden Steeplechase. Idealism has come into favour of late, but will have to show a lot of improvement on his Hawke's Bay running to have any chance, but hois stated to have come on wonderfully. Of thoso lower doAvn the list, Whakaweira and St. Kevin appear best. The former is moving splendidly in his work ,and if ho is a better horse than his stable mate (Chief Marshal) must be very hard to beat. St. Kevin ran a good race at Wanganui on Thursday, but failed badly on Saturday. The big fences at Ellerslie may trouble him. Whakawoira, Idealism, and Bercola should make an interesting race.

Twenty have accepted for the Cornwall Handicap. Cloy, Kakama, and Jolio Fille will carry most money. Amongst the unknown quantities in the Hunt Club Hurdles, Golborne, Merry Dance, and Skylight will receive most support.

A large field of twenty-two are still in the Members' Handicap. Toreador is going splendidly at present, whilst Bootle is sure to be fell forward also.

That good, but unlucky horseman, F. Flynn, received a bad fall off Strathmoira, at Ellerslie, a couple of mornings ago. Flynn has had a great number of falls, ami must ha ye created a record, in that respect. Gloy, who is very well at present, and is greatly fancied by his party, will bo steered by that good horseman, A. Oliver.

The Wangamii Phroso will be given a run in tho Prince of Wales Handicap at Ellerslie on Tuesday. Mr Moore's mare is very well just at present. '

North East will probably make his re-appearance as a hurdler at Trentham.ncxt month.

Delegate, who had several falls,, is now jumping much better, and promises to make it interesting to Dorando and Co. to-morrow. A. Oliver will steer the Taranakiowned Paoli and Crown Pearl. Hoanga, who jarred his muscles. will 1)0 an absentee from Ellerslie. Nyland will be ridden in stick event? this season by the Auckland horse man McFlynn. Owing to O'Connell being engaged for Lloyds, Bercola will be ridden by that capable rider J. Lyford. Two years ago, when engaged to •ide Whakaweira, who subsequently won, Frank Flynn received a bad fall off Red McGregor. This year he will 'iave to forfeit his ride on the same

gelding, through Strathmoira falling and injuring him. A. J. McFlynn will pilot Whakaweira to-morrow. Hen Deeley will have the mount on Kakama and Devastation to-morrow. An Adelaide cablegram states that the race horse Kirn has been purchased by Mr P. Connolly for 620 guineas.
