(By 'Cicero.) The Wanganui Jockey Club has not received a very good response from owners for their winter meeting, whjch opens to-morrow. The fields, both in class and numbers, should be much better considering the valuable prizes offered. However, should the weather clear, some capital-racing should take place. A baker’s dozen are left in the Borough Handicap. Ineuru 7.10 (inc. lOlbs. penalty) will probably start favourite, although Postillion is fancied by his party, and will command considerable support. The l Hack Steeplechase contains a like ijgdfiber. Kauroa ■ and Pi reworks (Prosser's), who iarje well seasoned,: and have had experience over “big” country, will be well supported.
Eleven have accepted for the Wanganui Steeplechase, which carries a prize of £6OO. Antarctic, who holds pride of place, has some splendid performances! to his credit, but it is open to doubt whether Salvadan’s son will strip at his best, a condition he will 'have to be in to successfully carry 12st to the front. The Native, who is second on the list, is a really brilliant hurdler, and is reputed to be just as good over country. The Worry gelding Is now trained by Prosser, which, in itself, is a strong recommendation. Okaihau, who won the same event last year, is very forward, and his party are sanguine. Glenmore, who ran some capital steeplechases last year, has received a lot of support in “doubles.” The Native, Okaihau and Glenmore should provide a good race.
Eleven also have paid up for the Century Hurdles. The Native, who is top weight, will probably start in the Steeplechase. Chief Marshal, who hails from a powerful stable, has been heavily backed for this event, but is sure to encounter a lot of opposition . from Ngatimaru. Of the dozen en- • gaged in the Hnck Hurdles, Goodwin Park and Jack Pin carry a lot of . money. The scratching pen has been freely used in the Connolly Handicap. Leonta, Byron, and Multiply are fancied by their respective parties. A good field of sixteen have cried content for the Puma Hack. St. Serf, who was not handled judiciously at Egmont, and Austin will probably be best backed, j Phroso is slightly lame, hence her withdrawal from the Connolly Handicap. Should she improve, it is Hall’s intention to take her to Auckland. Mason has disposed of Zeus to a couple of well-known sports, and there is a likelihood of fl ie Martian filly being trained in Hawora in future. Deeley was not successful bn St. Serf at Hawera, and the writer will be surprised should this horse not fun a better race in Nodder’s hands at Wanganui. , J. Melville has sold Rector Girl, and in future the daughter of Obligardo will bo trained by J. Butler. Byron is greatly fancied by his owner for the Connolly Handicap, and has been supported, coupled with Chief Marshal, for a largo sum. K drain will be a runner at Wanganui on the second'day (Saturday), and is likely to run prominently. Antarctic will be ridden by the Auckland horseman, Tutchen, in the P Wanganui Steeplechase to-morrow. The roan gelding Patronale, who g had a really good record in the Autumn, has now gone into winter quarters. It is intended to give him a special preparation for the £1250 Stewards Handicap, decided at Riccarton in November.
