PLUCKY ATTEMPT AT RESCUE. [Per Press Association.] Invercargill, May 18. Tho inquest touching the death of John M. Cochrane, who was drowned in the New river last .Monday, was held yesterday. Evidence was given by Cecil Hazlett that the boat swamped when crossing the river. He helped deceased to within three yards of the bank, when both were caught in tho eddy and whirled round. Hazlett told Cochrane to catch hold of his coat, and started to tow him towards the bank. Hazlett was pulled under twice, and then Cochrane let .go. Hazlett got ashore, threw- off his oilskin and ordinary coat, and jumped in again with his gum hoots on. He again reached deceased, but there was no movement in him. Hazlett got the body to the bank and secured assistance, but Cochrane was dead when helped on to the bank. T). Cochrane, a-brother of tho deceased, expressed, on behalf of the relatives their appreciation of Hazlett’s heroic effort to save tho deceased. The coroner returned a vei'dict of accidental drowning, and placed on reford his appieciation of Hazlett’s pluckv conduct. GUILTY OF MANSLAUGHTER. Auckland, May 19. In the case against Edward Sheehan, who shot his companion, George Fvfo, at Parahaku, the charge was reduced to manslaughter. Accused pleaded guilty. The Judge said he would not send the boy to goal, but to a reformatory, and accused was remanded for sentence till Tuesday. ILLICIT OPIUM TRADE. » Napier, May 18. At the Court to-day Joe Gun was lined £2O for harbouring opium. Defendant elected to go to gaol for two months, as he could not pay the fine.
