TOKO NOTES.
[ from our own correspondent.] On Thursday last the opening match of the Toko Gun Club took place. The shoot was a handicap match for a gold medal presented by Mr J. McGluggage. Mr W. H. Were (President of the Club) fired the first shot, and declared the match open. It was a twelve-bird match. The trap worked splendidly, and the birds were hard to break. J. Ritchie was the winner with eight ' birds, C. Tuck and F. Warrander being a tie for second place, with six birds. The shoot-off for second place caused a lot of fun. It was first miss out, and as both men missed they were a tie again.- The second round was another tie with one bird each. In the third round F. Warrander got second place. Thirteen members competed. In tho shoot-off very keen (interest was taken, as the shooters round after round tied, till at last M. Gernhoefer came out the winner with F. Warrander second. Seven competed, as follows : * Birds. J. Kilpatrick (14yds) ... 3 F. Warrander (14yds) ... 3 M. Gernhoefer (14yds) ... 3 C. Tuck (17yds) 3 J. Ritchie (17yds) ... ... 2 A. Clifford (10yds) ... ... 2 H. Harris (17yds) retired.
Afternoon tea was provided by the following ladies: —Mesdames Were, Kilpatrick, Gernhoefer, and Tuck. A largo number of spectators were present. Mr H. H. Judd acted as referee, and Air W. Pratt had charge of tho trap. Messrs Ferguson, Kilpatrick and Tuck were handicappors.
SPORTS COMMITTEE. At the filial meeting held in the Coronation Hall on Wednesday last, the Chairman congratulated the Committee on making the sports and social such a success. A bonus of £5 was granted to the worthy secretary, Mr G. E. Bocock, and a bonus of £3 3s was granted to the handicapper, Mr Kilpatrick. Both gentlemen thanked the Committee for the handsome donations. Mr Kilpatrick said the three guineas granted him would go to make up a prize for next year’s sports for a pen of two yearling heifers, any breed, for dairying proposes, to any local bona fide farmer. Mr Bocock said he would give one guinea for second prize. The Committee are very thankful to the gentlemen who looked after the children’s races during tho day; also to the gentlemen who acted as judges in the different events, and in assisting the secretary and handicapper; and to ail those who willingly helped. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to tho ladies who assisted, in making rosettes, arranging and helping at social, etc. The following are cash donations received from people outside of Toko, thus helping to make, the sports a success:—A. O’Leary, A. Davey, Mrs Abbott, J. Fitzgerald, H. Johnson, A. G. Rutherford, Messrs Mullan and Marshall, Messrs Webster and Hobson. Mr J. McCluggage, Mr T. Lamason, Mr E. Keiloher. Mr J. Maria, Air W M. Bayly, all of Stratford; Mr A. Boyd (Toko Road), and Messrs E. W. Mills and Co. (Wellington). The gold medal presented by Mr J. B. Hine, M.P., for points prize was won by H. Burgham (Toko). EUCHRE PARTY AND DANCE. On Friday night last some thirtylive Toko people drove down 1o Toko Road Hall in brakes, traps, gigs, etc.
to take part in a eucliro party and dance. Fifty-six players sat round the tables and took part in the games. The ladies’ prize (E.P. candlestick) was won by Miss C. Freer (Stratford), with nine games ; gentleman’s prize (pig-skin purse and pocket book combined) by Mr C. Riley and Mr L. Lyi'ord, both of Toko, with nine games each. In the play-off, Mr Riley became tire winner. The booby prize also fell to a Toko gentleman, which caused a good deal of laughter. Mr A. Bocock handed out the prizes to the winners. In the course of his remarks, ho said ho was very pleased to see Toko come out in such strong force, and take two prizes back with them. An excellent supper was provided by the ladies. Mr J. B. Hine, M. 8., was present. The floor was then cleared and dancing commenced, some thirty couples taking part. The duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr Geo. Mo rrison, and dance music was kindly supplied by Miss L. Leyden, Airs Wilks, Miss Clark, Miss Fields, Miss Cumberworth, Miss Corbert, and Mrs Lister. A very enjoyable evening was spent, and the function was brought to a close in the early hour of the morning, with three cheers for Toko, and three more for Toko Road. HALL COMMITTEE. The Coronation Hall Committee have decided to hold fortnightly assemblies through the winter. The first takes place on Friday, 25th inst. A euchre party and dance takes place on the 2nd of May, in aid of the crockery fund for the hall. GIG ACCIDENT. On Saturday evening, as Mr H.i Judd and a young lady were returning homo from Stratford, and just after crossing the railway line at Toko, the axle broke, and the wheel came off, with the result that both occupants were thrown out on to the road. Fortunately, they had a quiet horse and they were none the worse for their mishap.
