Westport, April 21
A fire at Cape Foulwind, between 5 and 6 o’clock this morning, destroyed a hotel owned by Costello, and occupied by Mrs Monigatti, and a tearoom, store and billiard room owned and occupied by Mrs Harnety. Both were practically new buildings, being erected only thrqe or four years ago. It was with difficulty that an extension of the fire was prevented. A 'hall adjoining Harnety’s store caught, but the fire was extinguished before' much damage was done, and Miss Clunan’s store, which is also the post post office, adjoining the hotel, also had a narrow escape. Practically nothing was saved. The fire appears to have begun in Harnety’s. As a pile of coal was still alight in dangerous proximity to the hall, the Westport Fire Brigade went out by train this afternoon, taking a quantity of vatei with them, owing to the local supply having run out, and they have now got the fire completely under control. The billiard tables in Harnety’s and the hotel were both lost. The insurances have not yet been ascertained.
