Mr Hill, secretary of the Boilermakers’ Union, reports on the socie- , ty’s efforts to obtain an advance of wages, that the employers’ reply complained that members attending football matches and funerals resulted in a loss of 18.8 per cent, in wages. •Many were averaging £3OO annually. The/employers added that every advance had been abused by ill-con-duct and bad time-keeping. JOURNEYMEN AND APPRENTICES. [Per Press Association.] Dunedin, April 15; Mr H. Y T . Widdowson, S.M., gave judgment to-day in the case of the Inspector of Awards v. George 3loody, in which £lO was claimed from defendant, in that from January 30th tr March sth ho did employ two apprentices to two journeyman, such proportion of apprentices being greater than that stipulated by the award. The .Magistrate said that defendant was carrying on business as a hahdresser at two places in Princes street. He was employing altogether 1m journeymen and two apprentices, and the question arose, whether defend ant was restricted under the award tc a prescribed number of journeymer and apprentices at each place of business, or whether the award applied generally over both places. Since he had been considering the matter, Mr Hollows had sent him an. authority by the Arbitration Court which war on all fours with this case. He held that shops were not to be treated separately under the award, and taking the two places together defendant had no more apprentices than he was entitled to. Judgment would be for the defendant.
