STRIKE AT PUPONGA.
HOSTILE DEMONSTRATIONS. [Per Press Association.] Nelson, April 9. The Mail’s correspondent wires that several hostile' demonstrations have occurred at Puponga, where a strike lias been in progress since Monday week. Last night an attempt, which was partly successful, was made to burn down the house of the deputy, who remained at. work in his official capacity." Police have been despatched to the scene.
There was a rumour that forty miners were on their way to Puponga to replace the strikers, who later assembled on the beach with all manner of offensive weapons. They had a considerable wait before the strikers concluded that they had been hoaxed.
A striker broke the, window of a butcher’s shop, and stole sonic meat. Ho dropped letters on the floor which led to his identification. The Union gave hiifl : lbt& hoiifs’iri'Avhich to leave tho district, which’ lid did' after paying for the,pnrif)fhedi;goCil3.; ' The president.'of the Union states that tho men acted entirely on their own responsibility, without reference to the! Fedcrationpnf Labour or any other body, which apparently debars them from strike pay.
