THE DAVIS CUP TEAM. I | (Received 9.30 a.m.) Sydney, March 20. The council idf the Tennis Association has received a cable stating that Wilding will not be available for play in the Davis Cup match owing to business engagements, but that Doust is willing to go to America. In view of this, the council decided to agree to America’s request that the preliminary tie be played in America. H. M. Rice lias been chosen to replace Wilding. The. team sails for America on 6th April. t The American Association has been asked to arrange matches in California and elsewhere. THE DAVIS CUP. Sydney, March 19. The American Tennis Association has cabled asking that the preliminary round of the Davis Cup be played in America, instead of in England and stating that it is impracticable to play in England on June 21st, the time fixed for

the completion of the match. They suggest that if Australasia is unable to agree .to play in America the match should be played on June 23rd, after the All-England championship. It undertakes to furnish a substantial guarantee if the match is played in America. At Opunako last Saturday, Manaia

defeated the local, club by 101 points to 86. 1 CRICKET, THE SOUTH TARANAKI TEAM. South Taranaki will be represented by the following in the represntative match against North Taranaki, to be played on the Recreation Ground, New Plymouth, ou Easter Monday and the following day :—Beechey, Dunlop, Ongley, Sullivan (Eltham), Hill, Cole and Day (Hawera), Stapleton, Colman and Cumby (Manaia), and Penny (Okaiawa). (Received 8.25 a.m.) London, March 19. The French Boxing Federation has disqualified Papka for year, for butting Klaus in the recent fight. The Association has adopted a new rule for punishing boxers who foul opponents in order to be disqualified and so avert defeat.

ELTHAM CLUB

The twentieth annual meeting of the Club was held on Tuesday night, when there was a good attendance. It was stated that there was every probability of three teams, being put in the field for the ensuing season, viz., senior, junior and second juniors. Twenty new members were enrolled.

The balance-sheet showed: Receipts, including balance in hand, £ll Is lid; members’ subscriptions, £7 10s; gate money, £5 12s; amounting to £3l Us lid; and expenditure £3O 4s lid, leaving a balance in hand of £1 ss. Assets £ls ss; and liabilities, nil. The following officers were elected for the ensuing season: Patron, Mr C. A. Wilkinson, M.P.; president, Mr H. A. Xuttall; vice-presidents, Messrs A. McGarry, G. Bennett; J. O. Lording, and W. H. James; general committee, Messrs W. Xarbey, J. Halpin, G. Glontworth, J. Phillips, N. H. Murray, W. H. McAlpine, and P. A. Ongley; treasurer, Mr J. O. Lording; secretary, Mr C. Ford. Messrs Xarbey and H. A. Xuttall were appointed delegates to the Rugby Union; auditor, Mr E. Parrott; selectors for the senior team, Messrs H. A. Xuttall, J. O. Lording, and the captain of the team; the selectors for the junior teams were left .to the committee to appoint. The opening day was fixed for April 3rd.
