Melbourne, March 20

'The Hon. Mr O’Malley (Minister "or Home Affairs) referring to the preference granted to British manufacturers in supplying material for the trans-continental railway declared :“lf we have to pay 1000 per centum preference, we are prepared to do it. This country is an offspring of Britain, and this Government lias no regard for tariff consideration or other matters when it comes to a question of extending our relations with the Mother Country. The Australian Government had no ill-feeling against manufacturers in other countries. All the same, we will pay 1000 per cent, or even more to get things made where our own flesh and hone will reap the benefit.”
