Much interest is being taken in the New Zealand and Australasian draughts championship to be held in Gore during Easter. Largo entries are expected, entries having been received from D. C. Calderwood (Huntly), the runner-up at the last championship. Hilliker, the champion, Bardoner, Lucas, and Brodie, ex-cham-pions. FOOTBALL. THE GAME AT HOME. London, March 16. In Rugby football Eli gland beat Scotland by three points to nil. In the Association ; game, Scotland scored two points to Ireland’s one. ‘ BOXING, BOMBADIER WELLS KNOCKED OUT. London, March 16. Gunboat Smith knocked out Bomhadier Wells in the second round. The result was surprising, because Wells gave a tine showing in the opening round.
A “WHITE HOPE” FROM TEXAS. St. Louis, March 6. At Fort Wayne, Jesse Willard knocked out Leon in the fourth round with a clean blow on the. jaw. Jesse Willard is a Texas cow-pun-cher. He stands 6ft. 6in,, and weighs 2201b5. . About ; two months . ago he knocked out Soldier Koarne, at Madi-son-square Gardens, with a terrific right-handed blow, which he seems still to have in stock. Willard combines great dexterity with rare speed for a big man, and after the battle with the soldier in New York, Stun Fitzpatrick, formerly Jack Johnson’s manager, declared that he regarded the cow-puncher as the future world’s champion. Other authorities, too have expressed the opinion that the Texas lad is, a most promising “white hope.” Fitzsimmons has said that Willard hafr the best general idea of fighting of any man in' the ring to-day.
