CYCLE AND MOTOR NOTES.

AN ALL-DAY RIDE

New Australasian figures were established last week for an all-day ride on a motor cycle, the successful rider being P. J. O’Brien, of Melbourne, who put up a record of 679 miles in 24 hours. The previous record was 629 miles, standing to the credit of P. Yeend on the same course. The route selected was a triangular one 83J miles from Camperdown to Mortlake, thence to Lismore and back to Camperdown, a circuit comprising the finest road in the Western District of Victoria. O’Brien rode 3i h.p. Rover, shod with Dunlop tyres, and despite stops for petrof, oil, food, etc., totalling Jhr 53min., he succeeded in maintaining the splendid average of 28 miles per hour for the full day’s run and 31 miles per hour for his actual riding time. All told over eight circuits were made. O’Brien started away on his long journey at- 6. IS p.m., just before dusk. His time for the respective laps were: First circuit, 2 hrs 36min ; second, 2hrs 55m in; third, 3hrs, smin ; fourth, 2hrs 45min; fifth, 3hrs Imin ; sixth, 2hrs 35min; seventh, 2hrs 40min; eighth, 2hrs 32min. At the conclusion of his last circuit O’Brien had 21 minutes to go, and in this period ho covered a further 12 miles, bringing the total distance covered up to 679 miles. The furthest distance yet recorded on the road in a day in Australasia—in fact, in the world—is 777 miles, standing to the credit of Messrs H. B. James and H. Stevens, who as far back as November, 1907, put up the mileage mentioned on Victorian" roads.

THE HOUR RECORD. Particulars are to hand from Los Angelos, California, of a wonderful motor cycle performance by L. Huiniston, who succeeded in cramming 88 miles 350 yards into one hour. The previous best was J. Do Hosier’s 83 miles 135 yards. Humiston covered the 100 miles in G 8 minutes 1 1-5 seconds, establishing all now world’s records from 13 miles upwards.
