UNDER WHOSE RULE?

The ideas of the untravelled outlander concerning one’s country are always liable to stagger any lurking complacency about the hole we make in the world, but, with the telegraph cable and the modern newspaper system, misconceptions and vanities of imagination grow every day more rare in this respect. That they still exist is, however, occasionally illustrated, and an amusing instance has this week come under the notice of the Auckland Star in the shape of a letter from a resident ef Los Angeles, California, to the Auckland Chamber of Commerce. The writer sets out soberly enough to ask for information about-New Zealand, its resources, and its people, and then, at the end of his inquiry, a thought arrests him. This New Zealand may be an excellent country to adopt, but how is it situated for revolution, has it a stable and peaceful Government, does it fly-the flag of republic or monarchy, or has it yet fallen victim to the Yellow Peril? So the resident of Los Angeles in search of knowledge asks cautiously at the end of his letter: “And in this connection I would ask under whose rule New Zealand is at present.”
