STOCK REPORTS IN AUSTRALIA
Sydney, March 11. The stock inspectors’ reports indicate that last year the drought seriously affected the States’ flocks and herds. The estimate at the end of 1912 was: Sheep sjx million, cattle over a quarter of a million, and horses ■ eleven thousand less than at the end of the previous year. Saturday’s storm caused great mortality. The drought weakened the dairy herds in the south coast districts. AMUNDSEN TO MAWSON. (Received 9.30 a.m.) Sydney, March 12. Captain Amundsen cabled from Denver, Colorado: “Please wire. Dr. Mawson thanks for congratulations, and wish him a pleasant winter.” THE HERESY HUNT. The Labour conference after hearing , the Hon. Mr Carmichael and Senator Gardiner rejected the Heresy Hunt Committee’s recommendations enthusiastically.
BRITISH BOARD OF TRADE. Fremantle, March 12. Mr Milne, British Board of Trade representative in Australia has arrived. Mr Milne recently visited Latin America and was greatly impressed with the potentialities of that fecund area, which in the next thirty years will startle the world with the richness of its production. Between 900 and 1000, million British capital is invested there, whereof half is in the Argentine. -Mr Milne said: “I have come to Australia to sit down and learn. In the near future we will he employing trade commissions instead of sub-ag-ents. I have decided to open an agency in Sydney.” SPORTING. At a blood stock sale Lord Kilcheran brought 100 guineas; Guillamatony 800 and Midnight Sun was passed in at 800.
