COMMONWEALTH CABLES.

A SYDNEY SENSATION. (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.' (United Press Association.) Sydney, March 7. Elgar Alfred Hatton, a bookmaker, with a young woman, after a drive in a taxi-cab, entered the bar of a hotel in the city. The couple were having a drink, when Hatton is alleged to have drawn a revolver and lired at the woman, wounding her in the left breast. Then Hatton fired twice (it himself the bullets entering his head. Hatton is in a serious condition. The woman gave her name as Violet Coghlan. (Received 9.35 a.m.) Neither Hatton nor Coghlan are in a serious condition. Before the shooting, they and other companions in a taxi went for a drive about the city and Coogee. The cause of the shooting has not been explained.

GROSS PERJURY. Sydney, March 7. An open verdict was returned al the inquest on Acheson, killed ui a brawl at Leichardt. The coroner saic. that ho was qtiite satisfied that gross perjury had been committed. It was a pity that people who saw the occurrence did not have the sense of duty to come forward in the interests ol justice.

USEFUL RAINS. (Received 8.5 a.m.) Sydney, March 8. Excepting the north-eastern corner, useful rain fell, thi'oughout the State, relieving the situation, which in mam districts, particularly the south coast, dairying had become serious. With the rain came a change from sultrj to wintry conditions.

WRECK OF A FRENCH BARQUE (Received 9.35 a.m.) Adelaide, March 7. The French barque, Hcan Hart bound from Antwerp to Wallaroo, with a cargo of pig iron and coke, went ashore at Wardang Island, opposite Port Victoria. The crew landed, but it is feared the vessel will become a total wreck. THE SCOTT FUND. Melbourne, March 7. The State Government decided not to contribute to the Scott fund. The reasons given are that some of the other States are not taking part; the people contributing directly, and that the matter is - one that the Federal Government should deal with.
