GAS STRIKE IN SYDNEY.
A STREET DISTURBANCE. (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (United Press Association.) Sydney, March 7. A dozen technical college youths who volunteered to assist in making gas marched four deep to the Kent street gasworks where 800 strikers were waiting to receive their wages due. The first youths were merely hooted, but when they turned down the gas lane they were assailed by streams of beer from an adjacent hotel. The hoys found that they had gone to the wrong gate, and inarched back by the same route, followed by a jeering and excited crowd, including a number of women. As the hoys reached George street there were cries of “Down them!” and they were surrounded. One was struck on the jaw, hut the presence of a solitary constable did something to check the hecklers, who were now all youths. A number of plain clothes constables then appeared and bundled the youths into): a passing tram.
SATISFACTORY AGREEMENT ARRIVED AT. (Received 8.5 a.m.) After the conference Mr McGowen announced that an agreement had been reached. By mutual consent the men will go hack to work on Saturday afternoon. He declined to disclose the terms of the agreement, hut from other sources it has been gathered that a meeting of strikers will he held this morning to ratify the provisional agreement, which there is reason to believe will prove acceptable to them. At a meeting of gas workers last night satisfaction was expressed at the favourable turn of events. (Received 9.35 a.m.) The secretary of the Gasmen’s Union stated that the only tiling he could disclose about the conference was that the agreement provided that every man went hack to hi® old place.
