A statement made by Maltese boatmen resulted in the arrest of Bluejackets Payne and Woodcock, belonging to the cruiser Royal Arthur, on a charge of throwing Artilleryman Hourigan overboard, he being drowned. The bluejackets admit that there was a quarrel, but state that Hourigan, who was drunk, fell overboard. DISABLED STEAMER. (Received 8.5 a.m.) London, February 24. The steamer Bremen, from New York to New Zealand, arrived at Saint Vincent, Cape Verde Island, with a damaged propeller. SENSATION AT A CAMMORIST’S TRIAL. Romo, February 24. A cainmovist prisoner receiving sentence for theft, felled the guards, escaped from the dock, and rushed the Bench. He almost throttled the judge before being captured. THE FIRE OX THE WHAKARUA. Capetown, February 24. The fire on the Whakarua occurred on the Kith inst. The cargo was badly damaged. SOUTH AFRICAN (VOLUNTEERS.
