SLAUGHTERMEN’S STRIKE.
THE PETONE EPISODE. (Per Press Association.) Wellington, February 21. Questioned to-day regarding the Gear Company’s action in discharging slaughtermen on Saturday on the ground that they were not doing sufficient work—killing only six sheep an hour, while able to do twelve—Mr M. J. Reardon (secretary of the Slaughtermen’s Federation) said that the company’s action would only make the men more decided in adhering to their demands. The Federation had a good insight into the working of “free” labourers, and was better pleas, ed than ever at the new position. The Gear Company’s action would only tend to put the men’s teeth on edge. Mr Reardon added that the Canterbury slaughtermen had abandoned the idea of accepting 27s 6d per hundred.
