A SERIOUS CHARGE. 1 ALLEGED THEFT AND FRAUD, I (Per Press Association.) ) Auckland, February 20. At the Police Court, Frederick John Ciaidcldek, lately a member of the 1 fii;m of Craddock’s Hardware Company, Christchurch, was charged that on or about January 25tli he stole tlm records of the company, viz. the private ledger, cash book, list of book debts, sptc. Craddock left Christchurch at the end of July, and since then has been staying at various places in Auckland. He was arrested last night after being about to board the southbound express. Amongst Ids effects were several records sought tor by the company. Craddock was also charged with being about to leave New Zealand without the intention of adequately making provision for his wife’s maintenance. J Accused was remanded to Christchurch. j Counsel asked for bail, which the police opposed, stating that accused iiad already absconded from the south and had taken the name of the firm, and when ho left Christchurch later assumed the name of Flu veil. Bail was I refused. ALLEGED PERJURY CHARGES. Pahiatua, February 20. Three young men, James Farrell, Walter Hirst, and George Gregory, farmers, of Konini, were charged yesterday before Magistrate Poynton with committing perjury in the local Court on January 28. The charge arose out of a case wherein Farrell was fined by Mr Reid, S.M., for as-, saulting a Chinaman named King I Jack, Hirst and Gregory were all the witnesses on that occasion. For the defence, both Farrell and Hirst swore that they were never in the Chinaman’s shop, and that Farrell never assaulted the Chinaman. The charge against Gregory was dismissed, Farrell and Hirst pleaded not guilty, and were committed for trial at the Masterton Supreme Court. Bail was allowed. PEOPLE’S DAY AT MASTERTON. Masterton, February 19. People’s day at the Masterton Show was held to-day in glorious weather. The attendance numbered 17,000. Results:—Draught championships; Stallion, J. D. Harding; district champion, J. H. Tatham ; mare, E. Short: gelding, F. E. J. Radcliffe. Champion hack: E. Short’s Scout. A feature of the show, was the splendid jumping in the competitions, and there were large entries. The ladies’ leaping competition resulted: E. Short’s Scout, 1; E. Short’s Dinizulu (ridden by Mrs Becker, Wanganui), 2; R. D. Morison’s (Ley Dawn (Miss J. Angus, Hastings), 3. Champion jump: J. McNiven’s Pickpocket, 1;| H. Hassall’s Micky Free, 2; Erl Williams’ Wild Fire, 3. Consolation jump: Erl William’s Wild Fire, 1; J. J. R. McDonald’s Betrayer, 2; Haseall’s Micky Free, 3. SENIOR CIVIL SERVICE. Wellington, February 19. The following list contains the names of New Plymouth candidates who have passed the Civil Service senior examination, held in January, 181.3, and of those who have passed in two or more subjects of the examination, the results of former examinations and of equivalents being taken into account.
