LABOUR MATTERS. THE GERMAN STRIKE. .By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (United Press Association.) Brussels, February 18. The general strike will coincide with the Ghent Exhibition. The labour parties’ organisation aims at its lasting for months. Housewives are making strong provision, and prices are rising rapidly. The Government is opposed to any attempt at compromise, and say that threats to strike have become a species of permanent blackmail. THE GRIMSBY STRIKE. London, February 18. Fifty free labourers at Grimsby are receiving 3s -Id per hour. The strikers persuaded many to leave after drawing 27s for a day’s work. BAKERS’ DEMANDS, Ten thousand London bakers are remanding a 54 hours’ week, 30s in shops and 32s in factories. The masters will concede this if each man bakes ten sacks weekly. The men reply that this is impossible. INCREASE IN COST OF LIVING ATTRIBUTED TO AWARDS. (Received 9.30 a.m.) Sydney, February 18. Before the Wages Board inquiry witnesses gave evidence that since 1910 the rent of houses had advanced 120 per cent, groceries 15 per cent, and there had been a great increase in the cost of clothing. All attributed the increase to the greater cost of labour as the result of the M ages Board awards. XIINERS’ FIRM STAND. (Received 10.55 a.m.) London, February 18. The North Wales miners decline to withdraw the notices of the strike of 12,000, which is pending.
