NORTH MT. LYELL MINE.
(By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (United Press Association.) Hobart, February 7. The Lyell relief fund has reached £5619, The commission reports that the law does not require more than one exit from a metalliferous mine, but anyhow there were passes extending in various directions to all the levels, whereby the men could have been rescued in the event of the collapse of the main shaft, or almost any occurrence except the generation of deadly fumes. Regarding removing the men, the shift bosses did everything humanly possible under the circumstances. The lessons of the disaster should include further legislation. SERIOUS OUTBREAKS. Other fires on the Beaconsfield ranges swept several adjacent farmers’ estates. Fires elsewhere included outbreaks at Willowgrove, Foster, Walhalla, and Maffra.
