THOSE OBSOLETE GUNS. (Per Press Association.) Wellington, February G. Tho Government states that the officer responsible for the purchase of the obsolete guns was tho military advisor in London, and his appointment has been cancelled on that account. Ho was an officer of advanced years, holding tho rank of General. The statement that the ainmuniton for these guns was no longer procurable was, however, incorrect. TELEGRAP IT OPERATORS’ AFFAIRS. Tho local papers have lately been publishing statements about the alleged grievances of operators in the ■Wellington Telegraph Office, the grievances being insufficient pay, anu too many examinations. These were alleged to ho responsible for numerous 1 resignations, tho men preferring to take work in Australia and under wireless installations. A deputation representing all grades of operators waited on Mr Morris, -the Secretary of the Post Office, and stated they knew nothing of these grievances. Regret was expressed at tho publicity given to the statements 1 , winch were incorrect and misleading. The deputation brought under the Secretary’s notice some matters which, in their opinion, required adjustment, and it is considered probable some of their requests will be granted, hut it was made clear that members of the deputation had no sympathy with the statements published by individual officers.
METHODIST CONFERENCE. Wellington, February 6. The Union of the Methodist Church of New Zealand and the Primitive Methodist Connection will be completed this evening at a public meeting in the Town Hall, when the Governor (Lord Liverpool) will preside. At the Methodist Conference to-day a formal resolution was adopted, and a declaration of union approved, and the president and secretary, the Revs.. W. Ready (ex-president) and Giltos (representing the Native race), and Mr Flesher were appointed to sign and execute the declaration, the deed to be witnessed by the Governor. The conference further vested in The United Conference the powers hitherto exercised by itself making alterations and amendment's to the law to bring them into agreement with tho basis of union. ) C) “THE CHEEK ()F SOME 1 PEOPLE!” Christchurch, February 6. The cable sent; To Mr Kpir Hardie, M.P., concerning military service, came from Professor Mills and Mr Semple. It was drawn up in tho Peace on Tuesday afternoon.
