A “BACK-BLOCK” CONFERENCE.

LOCAL BODIES DELEGATES MEET AT MANGAROA. The ImQk-block local bodies journeyed to Ohura to attend a conference which ’ Was held at Mangaroa last week. Whangamomona County Council was represented by Messrs. Meredith and Bacon, Mr Kennington represented Clifton, and there were also * delegates from Te Kuiti, Waitomo, Kaetokie, and Tauraarunui County Councils. The delegates were cordially received by members of the Ohura Council, and got to business in quick time. Various? local' relations were discussed, and . the following resolutions were handed to Mr Morrow, Ohura County Clerk, with a view to interviewing the Parliamentary governing body on bdhajf of the various counties in question:—To ask the Government to bring down at the earliest chance a comprehensive scheme of reading all land cut up for selection before such land is offered for sale; to form and metal main and arterial roads in such lands; to allow the local bodies to charge rates on bush and swamp lands immediately on selection.

After the conclusion of business the Ohura county chairman invited the visitors to a dinner in tho Council Chambers. The Whangamomona correspondent of the Herald says there was a large assemblage at 8 p.m,, but owing to tho unfortunate late arrival of' the conveyance carrying the liquid refreshments, a councillor suggested stonewalling, which lasted till 11 p.m. with dry yards and short stories. However, a liberal householder lent a little liquid material and the evening was concluded in harmony. As the visitors were making their way to bed, the appearance of the delayed vehicle put hopes into their hearts of a jolly day in store. Delegates from the Stratford end called on their way home to Ta’hora, where they viewed tho newly-discov-ered largo seam of coal which was uncovered through a landslip.
