BATTLESHIP NEW ZEALAND. 'By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright (United Press Association.) Capetown, January 25. The visit of the battleship New Zealand is arousing widespread interest in South' Africa. It is hoped the vessel will sojourn at Table Bay and at Simon’s Bay. London, January 25. Admiral Alay inspected tho battleship New Zealand. THE AUSTRALIAN NAVY. Sydney, January 26. The dockyard at Cockatoo Island was yesterday itanded by the New Soutn Wales Government to tbe Commonwealth, on the understanding that the works will be available for repairing snips belonging to any section of the Empire’s navy. The ceremony of laying three keel:, of the Australian navy was also performed, they being the torpedo boat destroyers, Derwent and Torrens, ana the protected cruiser Brisbane. Air Pearce, Federal Defence Alinister, said they were only a small commencement. Critics who dubbed them as the mosquito fleet must remembei that the British navy originated in a fleet of galleys. Ho believed Aus tralia could develop similarly. lh was confident the time was not distant when Australia would be able tc build even her Dreadnoughts here.
H.M.S. TORCH. London, January 25. Major Archer Shee denies that Cap tain Carver, late of H.M.S. Torch, confined a man in the refrigerator. He was only confined in the deckhouse, where the machinery was situated. Foj lighting and ventilation it was superior to any of the officers’ cabins. MORE SHIPS WANTED. Admiral Lord Charles Beresford, speaking at Birmingham, urged the ac qairing at any cost of five foreign Dreadnoughts now being built in England, and the laying down of six new ships this year.
