HEAT AND BUSH FIRES. (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (.United Press Association.) 1 Sydney, January 26. Bush fires, duo to the heat, and fanned by hot westerlies, occurred in the outer suburbs yesterday, Ttie j chief scene of the fire was at Hornsby, | where St. Peter’s Church and five cot- ! tages were destroyed. During ihr day sixteen localities reported outbreaks. The highest temperature in the shade was recorded yesterday, nearly a hundred degrees. At five o’clock a cool southerly wind sprang up, and the temperature dropped to 74 degrees. TRAMWAY BY-LAWS. (Received 10.25 a.m.) Sydney, January 27. A man was charged with riding on the footboard of a tram, and his counsel contended that proper no dees were not exhibited on the tramcars along the route to the terminus, and passengers were therefore unable to Darn \ the by-laws. The Magistrate upheld the point, and dismissed the case. THE FEDERAL ELECTIONS. (Received 10.25 a.m.) Melbourne, January 27. The Federal elections will be held on May 31.
