LATE LOCALS.
Mr A. E. Coleman returned to Stratford yesterday. The operation has been entirely successful, and he is now convalescent. Mr Coleman hopes to resume his duties shortly. A splendid day’s outing was spent by the scholars of the Presbyterian Sunday School yesterday, _ when the annual picnic was held at Ngaere. A large number of children went down by the 10 o’clock train, returning in the afternoon. All sorts of games, organised by the teachers, were indulged in, and judging from the happy faces that one saw arriving at the Stratford station late yesterday afternoon, the children had had “the time of their lives.” To have the experience of a perfect day, as it will be generally conceded, Stratford was clothed in yesterday, comes not often to the dwellers in these parts, whose atmospherical destiny is presided over so sternly by Mount (sieur) Egmont. The sport-ing-inclined among us revelled in the glorious sunshine, the while the haymaker made hay with the forelock ofj time in his fork-teeth. Arid every-! thing was lovely. But when fair! Luna, in all the fullness of her orb, cast her silvery radiance unflecked by any stray cloudlet upon the scene, then even prosaic councillors forgotj their little differences and gazed in a spirit of worship upon her majesty the night. Only “a perfect night” expresses the gladness of mere mortals at being alive and here to enjoy it. From more than one point of view the concert organised in aid of the funds of the Manse, and held in the St. Andrew’s schoolroom last night, was a distinct success. The musical| standard of the programme was very high indeed, and with such reputed performers as Miss Best, who is now very favourably known in Stratford, and Miss Bayly, of whose singing and pianoforte playing we can never hear enough, it is small wonder that the evening was thoroughly enjoyed by the big crowd present. Messrs H. W. Douglas, A. L. Jones, R. Davies, and the Misses Rogers and Duthie also contributed to the programme, their items playing no small part in the big success achieved.
