Cable advice has 'been receipted from London that the Board of Directors of the National Bank of New Zealand, Ltd., has resolved to make an issue of 100,000 of the unissuedi. shares of £7 10s each in the capital of the Bank. The shares will be offered to existing shareholders in the proportion of one new share for every two shares held, at £3 15s per share, of which £2 10s Avill be capital and £1 5s premium.

UNIVERSITY SENATE

Auckland, January 21

The University Senate resolved to ask the Government to amend the Mining and Coal Mines Act to enable graduates in mining and engineering to obtain managers’ certificates on production of certificates from authorised managers that they have been employed in underground workings for three years.

The Senate rejected a , motion by Professor Hunter that it.be an instruction to any committee that has to nominate the New Zealand examiners to first report for the approval of the Senate the principle it proposes to follow in the selection of examiners.

There was a long'discusison on the motion that there shall be one pass degree in arts and science, as recommended by the professional conference. The motion was defeated by 14 votes to 8, those in favour being Professors Brown (2), Chilton, Might, Hunter, Inerns, Mr Hogben, and the Rev. Mr Evans. FIRE BRIGADES’ DEMONSTRATION. Wanganui, January 21. At the New Zealand Fire Brigades’ Demonstration, to be held in Wanganui next month, ninety-nine teams at least will compete. This is a record for the Dominion. . Each team represents six firemen. All the arrangements locally are well in hand.
