SLAUGHTERMEN’S STRIKE.
PROPOSED CONCILIATION.
(Per Press Association.)
Christchurch, January 21
A meeting of ; the Sheep-owners’ Union td-night decided to write the chairman of the Freezing Company and the secretary of the Union, asking that the matters in dispute be referred to the Conciliation Council or the Arbitration Court, both sides to abide by the decision, which is to be made retrospective. THE POSITION. AT WAITARA. The I'News’ says : It is current report that Messrs. Borthwick and Sons have given notice to the slaughtermen that the Waitara works will close down on Saturday next. The employees’ notice was for the 30th, but the firm have chosen their own time. A statement is also being made quite openly, but whether correct or not is another matter, that if the proprietors can procure the services of ten butchers to man the boards they are prepared to carry on in spite of the slaughtermen’s ultimatum. It is not necessary that the slaughtermen should be as expert as the present staff, but so long as they can kill and dress reasonably it would suffice. (If course, this may be only rumour, but it is given as the general talk of the town. Messrs. Borthwick are particularly well situated as regards handling meat into Home steamer's', and probably could get through where others would fail. However, something definite wil be known in the course of a few days.
