FIRES.

EXTENSIVE BLAZE AT

CAMBRIDGE

(Per Press Association.) Cambridge January 21

A destructive fife broke out last night in a block of buildings immediately adjoining the site of the National Hotel, which was destroyed by fire last month. On the occasion of the hotel fire, the extensive stables owned by Crowther and Bell miraculously escaped destruction, although swept by the flames from the burning hotel. Last nigM, however, the stables were completely demolished. The fire broke out in a painter’s house and decorator’s shop, occupied by F. J. Fitzgerald, and rapidly spread to the stables on one side and to F. J. Marfell’s motor garage on the other side. The whole block was soon burning fiercely, and all the buildings were wiped out; and the adjoining temporary bar of the National Hotel, which was erected since the previous fire, was also entirely destroyed.

All the horses and vehicles were rescued from the stables, and six motor Cars were safely taken out of the motor garage. Four other cars belonging to private owners, however, perished in the flames. The stock of wines and spirits from the hotel bars was saved.

The supply of water proved quite inadequate to deal with the conflagration, and the Borough Council wdl again be urged to institute a water supply suystem suitable for fire-fight-ing purposes.

The damage will run into some thousands of pounds sterling, exceeding in extent the loss incurred by the hotel fire. Particulars of the insurances are not available, but the Royal Exchange, §outh British, and LondonLancashire offices are chiefly affected.
