A PECULIAR CASE.

Invercargill, January 15. A pecidiar case • was heard befoi e Magistrate Cruickshank this afternoon, when Archibald Derbie, a lettercarrier, was charged with sending an indecent publication through the -Post Office. Derbie wrote a letter under an assumed name to a girl with whom he was casually acquainted, making a certain proposal to her. She showed the letter to her mother, who took u to a detective. A rep’y dictated by the detective was sent, arranging i meeting, “and Derbie fell into the trap, meeting W - her mother and the detective were m concealment near at hand. They listened to the conversation, and eventually the detective arrested the defendant, The Magistrate said that women must be protected from such conduct, and sentenced Derbie to a month’s imprisonment.
SHOOTING AT A DENTIST,
Auckland, January 15
Kathleen Somerville Ryan was today committed for tria. on a charge of having attempted iv murder William James Colwell, dentist, by shooting at him with a revolver.
A FIREMEN’S STRIKE
Dunedin, January 15
What is stated to be the latest detuid of the firemen has just come to ht. It appears that when the Moeraki was at the Bluff on Monday the firemen gave a virtual 24 hours notice that unless the shift coming off work every morning at 4. o’clock were supplied with meat, which they .were to cook themselves, they would leawe the boat on her arrival in Dunedin. The firemen are always supplied with cold meats, etc., on knocking off work, but they maintained that as they were not in time for ordinary breakfast meat should he supplied them so that they could cook it and have it hot. The company, finally acceded to the request, and the boat sailed from Dunedin at her time-table hour to-day.
THE BOOT TRADE. ,
Christchurch, January 15
The conference of representatives of the boot manufacturers of the Dominion. which opened on Tuesday, concluded to-day. The following official account was supplied by the secretary, Mr. T. Hodgson, of Auckland“We have had a two,days’ sitting, discussing matters connected with the trade; and the conference has been very satisfactory. The result of our deliberations is that in future there will be one association for the boot manufacturing trade of' the Dominion. At present there are two associations, which are federated, but in future
there will be, one association to cover the whole trade in the Dominion.” When asked if there war any information regarding the conference to consider the tariff convened by the Minister of Customs, Mr. Hodgson said he had nothing further to communicate.
C.E.M.B. ANNUAL CONB’EREMCE
Nelson January 15
The Church of England Men’s Society’s fourth annual conference was held to-day, the Primate presiding. Eighty-eight delegates were present. The Primate preached in the Cathedral prior to the conference, dealing with the increase of population and the consequent increasing need for more spiritual agencies. The confer•nco is proceeding.
