WORK AND WAGES.
UNDERTAKERS’ PRIVILEGES. (Per Press Association.) Wellington, January 10. Edward Morris, undertaker, was charged to-day with failing to close his shop on a statutory half-holiday. His counsel urged that an undertaker’s business did not come within the same lines as other trading enterprises, and people died independently of all human laws and regulations. “It is absurd, to say that Mr Morris is to close his shop on Wednesday afternoon to the danger of the public health and convenience,” said the Magistrate, Mr Riddell, and he dismissed the case. ■THE THREATENED STRIKE. Sydney, January 10. There is much unrest and threats of a general strike by the southern miners, otving to the non-reinstate-ment of Russell. Carmichael states that he has learned that the Mount Kembla Company does not intend to reinstate him, and, therefore, remitted the matter to the Industrial Court. Considering the extreme importance of the case, he has asked for the appointment of a special judge to deal with it.
