Mr. Koir Hardie, speaking at Glasgow, said that the Unionists were seeking to bind the Empire-by preferential tariffs, and the Liberals by military agreements. Much as he hated protection, he feared that lie hated militarism a thousandfold more. The Liberals’ talk about an Imperial fleet and a defence committee was simply an attempt to weaken civil authority. In accepting gifts of Dreadnoughts, Great Britain might he creating a master more dangerous than any she had faced hitherto.
