Though a little rain fell during the day, the weather was quite good for the Stratford Racing Club’s second day, and the meeting was brought to a very successful conclusion. The attendance was much better than on the first day, and the investments were larger, there being £11,047 passed through the machine yesterday, making a total for the meeting of £21,954, as against £18,525 last year. Mr Chadwick’s adjustments resulted in" some splendid finishes, the racing throughout being of an exceptionally good charaoterTHE RACING.
Four scratchings left seven horses in the Toko Welter Hack Handicap, and from a splendid start Rector Girl led the field, the order after the first turn being Rector Girl, Princess Flo, Kathleen Mavourneen, Opeke. At the Caretaker’s Cottage there was but little change, save that Opeke was up with Princess Flo, with /Allure last. At the Gate, Rector Girl was in the van, with Kathleen Mavourneen and Princess Flo well in the running. Coming into the straight the field was well bunched, Sam Pan forging ahead at the distance, and in a great finish winning by a length, with two lengths separating Moirette and Princ.ess Flo. Another splendid race was the Cardiff Stakes, in which a field of eight participated. Glacier ran a welljudged race, and had Floss’s measure at the distance, winning somewhat easily. A little favoured she paid a handsome dividend. Floss, the favourite, ran into second place, after running third practically all through the race, but nearly three lengths behind- the winner. Only three horses faced; ,the starter in the Ngaere Handicap, And the public had their measure .’nicety, the favourite, . aijd,, -[/mi favourites, hnisjung- in tnaavcmer. L was a good race, and carried a lot of money,, punters being rewarded by a, gallant struggle/ Katua led Boronia for most of tne way/but the position was reversed coming into the straight. Red Lupin, on the outside, was coming up fast, and finished behind Katua.-,Time/ Imifi 15 i-osoc.
In the MakurL Hurdle ( Hack Handicap all started,* hut Ngalfruanui was badly, left at the post. { Timothy and Oteahau were first away, and the field stretched out considerably, until they had covered over a furlong, when Timothy dropped back, though still leading past the stand. Nearing the Caretaker’s Cottage the order was Timothy, Proxy, Bercola, Oteahau and Ngatiruanui. Round the back Bercola went up/and was running second at the Gate. At the next hurdle Timothy fell, and Ngatiruanui, whose maiden effort over the sticks won great applause, appeared to he on terms with the winner of yesterday. However, , Bercola finished strongly three lengths to the good, with Ngatiruanui second, Oteahau several lengths away*
The most popular win, and probably the best race of the day, was run in the Strathmore Hack Handicap. Dr. Paget rode a splendid race on Lucerne, and he was loudly cheered when he landed the mare past the post, a long neck to the good. Park Tide and Lady Fran were in the van in the early stages, but turning into the straight, Lucerne, on the inside, led the field, Patronness fighting hard all the way for second place. A magnificent race was the only possible verdict for the Dominion Handicap. After some delay a good start was effected, though the tape was carried away, and Ascalon led the field, with i Royal Dragoon and Patriotic handy, Master Tupuhi lying fourth. Coming into the straight, Royal Dragoon, on the inside, showed up, and was still ahead at the distance. The field [closed up, and Muleteer, on the outside, made a hold bid, but Ruscoe’s horse held on gamely and obtained the verdict by a head, with another head separating Muleteer and Katua. The Ladies’ Purse was a surprise packet, and Tirohanga’s - win,, after leading with Sylvan Glade all the way, gave his supporters a nice dividend. Howler, a hot favourite, was never in the race, and the same might be said of the second favourite, Lady Gordon.
The last race of the day, the County Hack, was admittedly, a difficult one to pick, opinion being equally divided as to the merits of Patronale and Crawford. Punters, however, were sadly at isea, and a good race ended in Aruaki, beating St. Luap by half a-length, with the favourite third. RESULTS. Details of the racing wore as I'"!lows:— 1.
