At the Primate’s instance a committee has been, formed, including the Bishop of Oxford, Mr. Eugene Stock, and Drs. Frere and Sadler, to advance the American proposal "for a world’s conference on faith and order. The Primate, after a conference with a delegation from the American Church, suggested that the English committee should merely hold itself in readiness to confer with similar committees representing non-episcopal churches or representatives of Roman Catholic and Eastern Churches, and that all nonAnglicans should be approached through the American promoters ot the movement. ACCIDENT ON AN OIL STEAMER. While t)io oil steamer Haneduards, being completed at Swan and Hunter’s yards, Newcastle, was testing her oil furnaces, flames shot out of the stokehold and severely burned ten workers.
THE STARTING GATE. The ‘Chronicle’ enumerates 554 horses which got badly away in the 1912 flat racing season, apart from a number kicked at the post. It says that the system of starting horses from a stand in conjunction with the starting gate has been a failure, and urges the Jockey Club to test the walk up gate start. PROFESSIONAL SUICIDE. Londqn, December 17. A man was rescued from an apparent attempt to commit suicide in the Seine, Paris, this morning. He was pulled out of the water, and the sympathetic bystanders were about to take up a collection for him when lie was recognised by a man as a person who made a comfortable living by pretending to drown himself and then receiving money from the charitablehearted who saw him rescued. The crowd became infuriated at being duped, beat the deceiver, and flung him back into (the river, leaving him to rescue, himself. He proved himself to be an excellent swimmer. WHITE GIRLS AND CHINESE. Vancouver, December 17. The authorities at Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, in response to an agitation which originated in the Labour Council several months ago, have induced all white girls employed in Chinese restaurants to quit their positions. ' . The Chinese are strenuously pro testing and threaten to invoke the aid of the law. THE DEADLY CHOLERA. (Received 10.40 a.m.) Constantinople, December 27. There were 1143 cases of cholera in Mecca in December, of which 578 were fatal. Vienna, December 27. The Secretary of the State Bank estimates that thirteen million pounds sterling have been withdrawn from the banks owing to the war panic, which has seriously affected industrial interests.
