PERSONAL.
Lord Liverpool comes of a cricketing family, and is himself very keen on the national game of England. Lawn tennis is another favourite pastime of his. He is lookig forward to the fishing and other sport for which New Zealand is famous. It is satisfactory to know that the interest Lord Islington took in the farming community is more than likely to be continued by the new Governor and Lady Liverpool, as both take a keen interest in all agricultural matters. At the present juncture in the history of territorial training in the Dominion the arrival of Lord Liverpool will be specially welcomed,' as he is a soldier. He saw service in South Africa, and has always closely followed the fortunes of the territorials in the Old Country, at present holds a colonelcy in the Special Reserve Brigade.
Mr W. J. Geddis, of Napier, has accepted the position of managing director of the New Zealand Times Co., Ltd.
Mr J. H. Howitt, C.E., of the Engineers’ Staff, Wellington, has been appointed engineer to the Timaru Borough Council from 22 applicants, at £4OO a year. The Rov. Father A. D. Mulvihill, for many years parish priest at HaW era, and wgII known throughout tho provincial district, is now residing at Moruga, New South Wales. Sir George Reid has started for a fortnight's holiday in Switzerland. Thence he will go to Vienna, Berlin,, and Paris in connection with the extension of Australian trade on the Continent.
Marquis Taro Katsura,the newJapan©se Premier, held the same office from 1901 to 1906. He was in office when the Anglo-Japanese Alliance was formed in 1902, and when it was renewed on a broader basis in 1905. He was also at the head of affairs during the war with Russia. Katsura is a , master of. political manoeuvring, and holds the record for length of term in a land of unstable Governments.
