FARMING IN CANADA.
A .rncnossinl Canadian farmer, who also lavs claim to have had expert-
I once in fanning in Australia, and in 'East Africa, after speaking in glowing terms of the prospects Canada offers to “men of grit,” gave a word of warning to intending settlers in that much-talked-ahout land. They must not, he said, he led away with the literature which gives such glowing reports of the wonderful returns to ho made out of wheat and straw, if he had an exceptionally good crop of wheat he would doubtless make money hut the chances were that ho would regret Ins neglect of mixed fanning. The severity of the long winters must also be provided for by warm houses and suitable clothing. It was little short of cruelty to take an English farmer and put him out on the prairie land. For a few years, at any rate, the man needed some sheltering Muffs. The beauty of spring and summei made amends for the cold winter, and all through the year there was a crispness in the air, which yon did not get in the States. At present it was admitted there is a real labour difficulty. Men could earn 12s a day in harvest time; ho has heard of men getting as much as 16s a day.
